The PoolParty Semantic Recommender

This release introduces the new PoolParty Semantic Recommender as a beta feature.

The PoolParty Semantic Recommender is a knowledge-based middleware recommendation solution. The structured data it uses is a knowledge graph (KG) with highly expressive taxonomic and ontological information to leverage the knowledge for high quality recommendations. One major advantage of our semantic recommendation approach is that the results are clear, traceable and transparent. It is possible to follow the reasoning path from input to result.

The information space for the PoolParty Recommender is any corpus of documents of a domain represented in the knowledge graph and can therefore be analyzed by the PoolParty Extractor to identify knowledge graph entities. In contrast to content-based recommenders, PoolParty represents textual content as a graph structure based on extracted information and thereby directly integrates it into the knowledge graph.

The PoolParty approach to recommenders provides high recall as it is able to retrieve results not obviously related to the input, rather via ontology-based classifications and relations in the knowledge graph. It also maintains high precision due to the knowledge graph including explicitly defined facts and being based on a knowledge graph representing a curated domain model. With the adaptable architecture of the PoolParty Semantic Recommender solution it will be possible to link knowledge graph entities to statistical AI implementations (ML, LLMs, …) in the architecture thereby synergistically combining their functionalities.

The PoolParty Recommender Workbench

This release also introduces the new PoolParty Recommender Workbench providing configuration capabilities for the PoolParty Recommender. The PoolParty Recommender Workbench supports subject-matter experts in finding the optimal combination of parameters for the semantic recommender system. Entire configurations or just parts of the recommendation query can be saved, tested and validated as well as exported for both use in another Recommender Workbench instance and as cURL requests.

Application Development Framework Release Announced!

We are pleased to announce an upcoming release of the new PoolParty Application Development Framework (ADF) coming along with a set of APIs facilitating building semantic AI applications layered over PoolParty. This Framework will also offer a user interface where you can configure and run simple semantic search as well as recommender applications. The planned release date is November 2023.

Improvements

The major improvements coming with the current PoolParty release are an improvement of the PoolParty frontend performance and workflow and re-design of the Data Validator frontend.

  • Performance of the PoolParty frontend has been increased; resource caching on the user interface also being improved and hence making the frontend loading noticeably faster, especially on pages repeatedly visited by the user.

  • The PoolParty frontend architecture has been re-designed to even further enhance user experience and facilitate navigation. Now every page in the PoolParty application has a defined URL shown in the browser address bar allowing use of the back and forward buttons of the browser to navigate between individual pages, as well as quick and easy sharing of bookmarks and links.

  • The Data Validator frontend has received a complete overhaul. The new, re-designed, modern frontend offers even greater ease of use and clearer workflows.

Bug Fixes

  • The definition field on the Concept Details View is again re-sizable.

  • Concept extraction works again for the NIF format in the extraction.

  • Restoring system snapshots no longer makes the texts in the description field disappear.

  • The SPARQL endpoint in PoolParty now accepts prefix definitions ending with "#".

  • Sub-classes and disjoint classes can be created again on the New Class dialog.

  • The data type of custom attributes can be modified again.

  • Custom classes can be added again to collections.

  • Accents and other similar characters such as German diaeresis or umlaut are no longer blocked on the user interface when editing concept and concept scheme labels.

  • Uploading documents containing the "<" character to corpus management no longer results in truncated documents.

  • Keycloak instances running on the on-premise deployments now start up correctly when the installation has been carried out using the "root" user.

  • Projects exported from a PoolParty version 8.x can be imported to PoolParty version 9.x.

  • Size check of documents uploaded to corpus management has been improved to prevent over-large files from impairing corpus analysis.

  • SKOS-XL labels can be used again without activating the workflow feature.
